Origin and history of the Sokoke breed

The Sokoke is a cat of African origin, and is very common in Kenya, where it lives freely, both in rural and urban areas. In 1978, some of these specimens were captured by J. Slater, an English breeder who adapted them to live as domestic cats. By 1984, the breed was officially recognized in Denmark and, gradually, it spread to other countries in Europe.

Today, some of their roots remain intact, as they continue to live with African tribes living in Kenya, such as the Giriama.

Sokoke Character

Although many people think that Sokoke cats are unsociable, the truth is that they are one of the most affectionate breeds that exist , getting along wonderfully with both adults and children. But they also get along with other animals, whether cats, dogs or other pets, as long as they are sociable. In addition, they continually seek affection and attention from their owners, and they love to play.

Sokoke Health

Being a naturally-occurring breed, the Sokoke cat does not suffer from any known genetic disease. In addition, it is perfectly adapted to the terrain in which it lived: Africa. As a result, it stands out for its great strength and endurance.

Typical Sokoke Care

The ears, eyes and mouth of the Sokoke must be kept clean at all times . As it is a very short-haired cat , it does not need to be brushed constantly, but once a week is sufficient. In addition, it must be taken into account that it is very sensitive to the cold, -so you should not miss our article on “ Heated beds for cold cats ”-. Therefore, the ambient temperature must be lukewarm and, if it gets wet, we must dry it quickly.

What is the best diet for Sokoke?

The Sokoke cat’s diet should always be adapted to its age, lifestyle and energy needs. They adapt well to all types of food, but it must be remembered that they are carnivores, so it has to be the main ingredient in all meals.

Feeding in stages

Puppy

When a Sokoke cat is a kitten it should be fed with mother’s milk and, when it is weaned, it is necessary to combine the milk intake with a porridge made with water and feed for kittens . Afterwards we will gradually move on to unmixed feed.

Adult stage

When your cat turns one year old, it will enter the adult stage, so we will have to provide it with a specific feed. It is best to mix it with puppy food so that it gets used to the change. If we have sterilized it or it has any health problems, we should choose a feed suitable for it . We invite you to read more about this point in our article “ Sterilizing cats, everything you need to know ”

Senior stage

When your cat reaches the senior stage, you will need to feed it with a food for older cats. It is advisable to consult with your veterinarian , especially if it has any kind of illness or ailment. And if the new food does not suit it, change it for another brand.

What to consider when adopting a Sokoke
