Chausie Cat Care Guide Personality, Care, and Health Tips

Origin of the Chausie Cat

The origins of the Chausie cat date back thousands of years to the Nile Delta, where remains of early hybrids of domestic cats and jungle cats called Felis Chaus have been found.

During the 1970s in the United States, attempts were made to crossbreed this jungle cat with domestic cats that looked like wild cats to create a breed of cat that had the temperament of a domestic cat but the appearance of a wild cat.

It was not until the 1990s that a serious breeding program for this breed was developed, thanks to the work of American breeders Judy Bender and Sandra Cassalia . In 1995, the breed was finally registered with TICA , and it was not until 2003 that the other international cat organizations registered it.

Types of Chausie

There are different types of Chausie cats depending, basically, on the color combinations of their fur.

Colors

The Chausie cat’s tabby coat may contain the following types of colors:

  • Black: Chausie cats with a black base coat are characterized by having dark colored stripes.
  • Brown: When the Chausie has a brown base color, it may have lighter colors on the belly and chin.
  • Silver: We say that a Chausie cat is silver when the color of its coat is light.

Hair type

The Chausie cat’s hair type is short and, curiously, it does not acquire its definitive coat color until it is 3 years old .

Chausie Cat Puppy

The kittens of this breed of cat are very playful and active , so they need stimulation through interactive games and human contact. On occasions when their owners are not at home, they can entertain themselves with some toys that have been previously given to them and that do not require human attention.

Character and behavior of the Chausie

Like kittens, adult Chausie cats are considered very active and playful , so it is vitally important to share play sessions with them .

Being a very affectionate animal and attached to its family, it is not considered a very independent cat . It is not usually afraid of strangers, as long as the first contact has been gradual and pleasant. It cannot be considered a very calm cat either, but quite the opposite, and that, together with its great intelligence and curiosity , can make it run away from home to explore the world around it.

How to feed a Chausie based on its age?

Depending on the stage of life they are in, Chausie cats will need to be fed in one way or another .

Feeding in stages

The first food that a Chausie puppy should eat is its mother’s milk , which it will be fed until it begins to be weaned, around one month old. Afterwards, the intake of mother’s milk will be combined with a porridge made with a mixture of water and kitten food and, little by little, the intake of milk will be reduced and the intake of porridge will be increased. Finally, from 2 months onwards, the puppy will be fed dry food .

As an adult , his food must be adapted to his nutritional needs as an adult cat. If he is neutered or has any allergies, intolerances or serious pathologies, his food will have to address these issues.

Finally, in the senior stage , you will need to change the feed to one intended for this type of older cat. Again, if the cat has any serious pathology, the feed should treat it, always under the recommendation of your veterinarian.

Chausie Cat Health

Although these cats are usually in excellent health , they are also susceptible to certain diseases, such as progressive retinal atrophy or pyruvate kinase deficiency .

You must keep an eye on its weight , as it is a very greedy cat that must exercise regularly to maintain its weight and, in adulthood, it may suffer from joint problems.

These cats may also suffer from pathologies typical of other cats , such as eye, oral or gastrointestinal problems.

Chausie Cat Care

This type of cat does not require special care that is very different from other cats in general.

Hair

Their short hair is very easy to care for , requiring only a weekly brushing to keep it clean and healthy. During shedding periods, the number of times you brush their hair should be increased.

Fur

Their skin does not require very specific care either, except if they usually go out of the house, the ideal is to check if they have any parasites in their fur and put a collar or antiparasitic pipette on them to avoid them.

Others (eyes, ears)

As with other cats, it is important to thoroughly clean their eyes and ears to avoid diseases such as otitis or conjunctivitis. With a sterile gauze and a solution for ears and eyes or, failing that, distilled water or saline solution, they can be cleaned perfectly without any difficulty.

Adopting a Chausie

Being a very special cat, it can be very difficult to find a specimen of this breed for adoption . Even so, you can search in different shelters or protectors in case you find a cat of this type.

However, if you want a cat that is very similar to the Chausie, you can ask in some of these shelters or animal shelters for a cat with characteristics similar to the Chausie cat, even if it is not of that breed. Once you adopt it, you will love it so much that you will forget that what you wanted was a Chausie cat. You will see!
